IMO Strengthens Maritime Sustainability and Emission Reduction Measures

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has achieved major progress in advancing global maritime sustainability during the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84), held in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. Discussions focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, strengthening marine pollution prevention measures, and enhancing ocean protection initiatives.

A key highlight of the meeting was the continued development of the IMO Net-Zero Framework, aimed at supporting the shipping industry’s transition toward net-zero emissions by or around 2050. Member States also advanced negotiations on technical and economic measures to reduce carbon intensity across the global fleet.

In addition, IMO adopted a new action plan targeting the elimination of plastic waste discharge from ships by 2030 and approved stronger regulations related to ballast water management and underwater radiated noise to better protect marine ecosystems and biodiversity. The committee further approved the establishment of a new Emission Control Area (ECA) in the North-East Atlantic region to reduce harmful air pollutants from ships.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized that global discussions on shipping decarbonization are “back on track,” with further negotiations and policy developments expected at MEPC 85 later this year. These developments highlight the maritime industry’s growing commitment toward cleaner, safer, and more environmentally responsible shipping operations worldwide.
